Character Name: Lea “Axel” Flynn
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Age: 23
Physical Description:

To call Lea an ‘average looking’ individual would not only be proven a terrible understatement, but even possibly an insult to his character. When standing fully straight, which was hardly ever, he stands at 6’0 even. However, because of his gangly posture, leaning forward or back, deprives him of a few inches. It wouldn’t be a surprise to most that he weighs only around 125lbs, looking thin to the point of starvation, or at least severe malnutrition. Despite this, one can say this fits him when it comes to defining body language. Lea has long crimson strands that naturally spike out behind him. And in contrast he has sharp green eyes, slanted to emanate an exotic appeal. After mysterious circumstances that no one knows, two distinct slashes carved underneath his eyes were added, only heightening what was considered ‘odd’.

There was something amusing with how the nobles set themselves out in public; to wear layers upon layers of clothing as if they were anticipating the next Ice Age. But even then, they had the uncanny ability to look sophisticated either way. Lea’s eyes are accented by the thin wire frame glasses he wear (One expects it’s only to cover up those tattoos, or maybe the poor fellow actually does have bad vision), and his hair at least straightened to the point of sophistication. Whatever’s deemed fashionable by the upper class he is most likely to wear, with an addition of his long black coat that he wears almost every time he goes out in public.

But when in the presence of Axel it’s almost shocking to see him pull a complete 180, throwing off those sissy little glasses and letting it all out like a feminist in the 60s. Not bothering to maintain his hair it often takes its natural spiky state, enough to turn many heads whenever he’s just breezing by a street. Everything he wears is almost in the state of ‘hand me downs’, either loose or partially dotted with holes to fit perfectly with the more poor and hard working class. All the shirts that he wear are long sleeved, partially rolled up to his elbows so they wouldn’t get in the way of his work. Axel’s pants are slacked, and his shoes are worn from walking, scuffling, throwing them at an obscene number of people, and many other uses.

Personality:

It was hard to say if anyone in Azhun was entirely honest, but to be completely dishonest one had to be honest in saying they were dishonest. And everyone knew that this kind of dishonesty only happened in marriage.

The city was filled with ‘conners’ alike, but Lea never really liked calling his work with such a pernicious term. It sounded so dastardly, didn’t it? So Lea merely decided to create his own concept of multi-lifestyles, in the end dubbing the term as ‘Bunburying’, and has since been a fluent Bunburyist for almost 8 years.

Lea, to the dismay of others, is most likely the most snide and ruthless person residing within the upper class. His theories of the poor are conservative, “If the poor didn’t want to be poor, they should have done something about it sooner. Either that or they should have been born rich.” Whenever asked to give his own opinion, Lea never misses the chance to be a cynical bastard. Whether cryptic or blunt, he successfully manages to pull off that calm revere that can drive plenty up the wall. He shows no expressions for his work other than the small hint of a smirk from the corner of his lips, but other than that brushes off other’s responses with a bored look and maybe a shrug.

But just like his demeanor Axel seems so much different than his collected alter-ego. Whatever dignity that previously graced his path had ultimately fallen off a steep cliff, leaving instead a laidback attitude that’s far from appreciating for many of the hard-working class. But it’s not to say that he himself wasn’t a hard worker, it was just his attitude that turned many heads. Instead of the complex cynical diction Lea had done, Axel uses quick phrases with that ever-teasing tone in his voice. He’s very haughty in his words, and his body language is far from strict and eloquent or even polite; instead leaning awkwardly back whenever he stood or walked. The redhead is often seen grinning or smiling casually when talking to someone no matter the subject at hand. Your Mother died? What a shame, she always was a good lay~

(Notes:

-If you’re unaware of the word, ‘Bunburying’ is an actual term used in the late 1890’s play ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde, where the main character talks about an imaginary friend called ‘Bunburry’ who’s always sick and makes excuses to ‘visit’ him whenever he wants to avoid attending to whatever social parties his snooty Aunt plans. This type of conning runs rampant in the play, when two men decide to act as the same person in two different locations and done the name ‘Ernest’. Wikipedia has a pretty decent article about it if you’d like to know more.

-Strangely I thought this as proper for Axel. Those who’ve played Chain of Memories would know how different Axel acts in KH2, almost completely shedding his ‘cryptic’ and ‘manipulative’ structure to something more light-hearted but still teasing. Because of this it seemed right to show that in ‘Lea’, who switches lifestyles between himself and ‘Axel’ quite often. But I purposely exaggerated both to show the wide distinction between those two.)

Strengths:

Because of the lifestyles that Lea had worked so hard to play, it’s common sense that he’d have to grow a strong will against those who he had portrayed so flawlessly on either side. Not much can really phase him, and whatever does manage to twinge a nerve is held tightly under wraps. Both sides portray a ‘get go’ attitude, whether it may be positive or negative, which could prove to be a let up or let down depending who you meet. They are both sharp tongued and good with words, but Lea more so than Axel because of the reputation in the higher arches of society that he must keep.

As Axel the redhead has an almost deranged love for baking and sweets, which is the reason why he runs a bakery on the other side of the city, away from those who know Lea.

As for fighting, both Axel and Lea are quick on their feet. There are plenty of odd jobs needing to be accomplished in a bakery, where Axel is continuously on his feet moving everything around and carrying supplies to and fro in the kitchen. His precision and aim is one that couldn’t be challenged, which is why little thieves always get pelted in the head with a flying empty baking sheet whenever they try to get away. Lea, because of his attitude, is plenty of times a target for others in the street at night. So he’s quick and agile in his feet, usually to ditch his enemies and sometimes even standing and fighting if there’s no other choice.

Weaknesses:

But there’s always a price when it comes to having strengths. Lea’s frame and weight make it very easy for him to get knocked over when he does get caught by a stronger man. And since Axel stands so awkwardly at times it brings terrible pain to his back and shoulders. And it doesn’t matter which side he’s acting because either way Lea cannot help but succumb to an egocentric point of view, finding it rather difficult to see things in another person’s eyes even though he himself plays two different personalities.

A lot of the time he can’t really be close to anyone because it would bring a hefty toll on his idling lifestyle. A selfish reason, he just isn’t willing to give up his hard work to gain anything more than a light friendship.

History:

(Omigod this sucks so much. :[ ‘M srry.)

The story that circulates Lea Flynn is one of epic proportions. His actual birthmother is unknowing to him, instead the last memory he can recall (Of course it wasn’t really recalling but someone else telling it for him) was that he was found in a handbag in a railway station by a rather warm-hearted yet elder noble woman who was widowed without children. But the circumstances had grown ripe by then, and only months afterwards did the kind woman die. A terrible loss, the estate in which she lived was forwarded to Lea when he became of age, and until then was watched over by a stern housekeeper who seemed hell bent in cramming him with useless knowledge.

Now, Lea never really enjoyed the lifestyle of the upper class, or at least the responsibilities that were bestowed upon it. Whenever he was given the chance he would often sneak out and just wander around the streets of Azhun without any real purpose or reason. In his eyes, it was kind of boring to memorize blotted ink on fraying sheets of paper that was only successful in redundancy and lack of actual common sense. And many a time he would just get rid of it by using it as kindling for a fire.

But the lifestyle of an upper classman and the aristocracy that was bestowed upon it was kind of useful in some ways. Even when given everything they wanted, people were flawed to have limitless desires, which opened up another, and darker side of the upper class. Lea had learned from the start that trust was scarce and compassion was a rarer sight, and ultimately grew his wicked personality from these flaws in order to make it easier on himself.

As he grew older and older he was given a wider view of how his fellow class was built on and how the nobles would often wander away from the responsibilities of their lives for a night or two and spend those hours drinking and partying. How when the windows were shut women threw off their stockings and smoked to their heart’s content. Kind of a funny way for the higher ups to act so out of line like that.

But then Lea wondered if the rich got tired of their jobs as trying to be better than everyone else. And as he thought this he looked down at himself and that pretty much answered his curious questions.

If a noble could act like someone else for a day, could it be possible to make an entirely new life from the same base?

At around the age of 15 Lea finally decided to test out this theory and ran away with seemingly no intent of return. Cutting his hair to not look as obvious, his work was quickly set in motion. When one willed themselves hard enough they could make anything happen, and with much effort Lea grew an entirely new persona, free from the restraints of his previous lifestyle and gained all his knowledge thusly.

He had came back two years later (With his hair fully regrown), later excusing himself with saying that he merely wanted to explore the world, in which one of the maids gave a sigh of relief, saying that she thought that he had died in France from a ‘nasty chill’. Of course the others gave her a weird look, not knowing where this ‘France’ was, and told the woman to take the rest of the day off and rest.

When talking about his ‘adventures’ Lea had brought up the name of a good friend of his called ‘Bunbury’, who was always sick and wished for him to visit him whenever he could. The Housekeeper would give a disapproving look, but Lea would shake it off and say that Bunbury was a rather wealthy noble, but constantly bedridden and thus concluded that it would be a good investment just incase he finally decided to die.

So this began a routine cycle that happened for 6 years, where Lea would ‘leave town’ to visit his friend when in reality he continued to explore Azhun. When he was younger and forbidden to go outside, he would spend much of his time in the kitchen, calmly watching as cooks prepared the meals served at the estate everyday. It had grown to be a habit for several years, and Lea had to thank them as he worked on his own business in the form of a Bakery.

Having done the name ‘Axel’ (A clever little trick he’d say) he opened the Bakery in a quaint little street corner and lived on the floor above it to keep himself an even lower profile. There he was allowed to act the way he wanted, and just as long as he prepared something good no one would ever mind him.

Those past 6 years he would switch back and forth between his lives, spending almost all his weekdays as Axel and meandering back to the estate on the weekends to attend whatever social gatherings he was invited to. Strenuous labor, but someone had to do it right?
